I believe that the Labour Party is best when in touch with the local community, working in partnership. So I am really pleased that in Newington ward our three Labour candidates have been endorsed by:
The chair of the new Doddington Grove TRA (which we helped get re-established)
The chair of Trustees at the Walworth Garden Farm
The chair of the Newington Tenants and Residents' Association (TRA)
The chair of governors at Crampton primary school
The chair of Brandon2 TRA
The chair of the local ward panel (focused on policing issues)
The chair of the Pullens TRA
The chair of the Friends of Pasley Park
The chair of the Penrose TRA
The chair of the Kennington and Walworth Neighbourhood Action Group
The endorsements of these local leaders is an indication that we have worked hard for our local community and have gained their respect. From raising money for the Farm to replace lost Government funding, to working closely with the police and tenants associations and helping regenerate Pasley Park, Newington Labour is able to stand on a strong record of local partnership and delivery.
I hope the endorsers speak for the whole ward in endorsing Maisie Anderson, Eleanor Kerslake and I for the 22nd May elections. I also hope that we can continue working hard for the ward - and beyond as part of a broader, invigorated Labour team across Bermondsey and Old Southwark and the whole borough after this year's local elections.
It will be a tough fight on 22nd May to win back wards for Labour held by the Lib Dems for years, but too many people have:
- been hit by the bedroom tax
- seen Southwark fire station close
- know people waiting longer for NHS treatment
- witnessed police and PCSOs disappear
- are experiencing this Government's cost of living crisis
And tell our Labour canvassers that whilst they used to consider the Lib Dems, this time is different. The Lib Dems no longer represent our community. 'Lib Dem? Never again!' is becoming a refrain on doorsteps across Walworth, Borough, Bermondsey and Rotherhithe.
