Last year a Kings College study put the total number of deaths due to air pollution in London at a staggering 9,500. Elephant and Castle in my constituency has the worst air quality in south London. Under a Tory mayor and a Tory government this issue wasn’t taken seriously and Londoners are suffering as a result.
Thankfully it’s taken Sadiq less than a week since becoming mayor to propose serious action to deal with London’s pollution problem. Sadiq’s extension of the ultra-low emissions zone and proposal to introduce charges on the highest polluting vehicles are just two elements of a long term vision for a greener London which Labour can help make a reality.
In his manifesto Sadiq promised to make London a world leader again when it comes to clean air and low carbon innovation. It’s hugely important that Labour delivers this for London and I believe we can do so.
On polling day in London I held the government to account on its own terrible record on improving air pollution. The government is hesitating to put forward a strategy while a Labour London is taking decisive action.
I look forward to the consultation on Sadiq’s long term plan to improve London’s environment. The choices we make on pollution today will improve the health of all Londoners and save lives in my constituency.
After 8 year of Boris Johnson, Sadiq is already providing a breath of fresh air for my constituents and all Londoners.
