This weekend we took our campaign to Grange ward in SE1 where we won a councillor (Lucas Green) on 22nd May. Almost 50 people helped over the weekend - thanks everyone for the effort.
Grange has never been held by Labour - as it was last won by our Party when it was still Abbey ward in 1982. After the notorious 1983 by-election with a divided Labour Party and vicious campaign from Hughes' Liberals, Labour lost the area and it has taken over 30 years to win it back.
Hughes' handpicked Lib Dems were heavily beaten in the local elections. We took 10 Councillors on a significant swing. But Lucas needs our team help to get embedded in the area and it was great to have so many people (and a dog!) out helping this weekend. With our combined efforts I believe we can ensure one of our campaign messages takes root: that Labour is Back in Bermondsey.
Special thanks go to Sirajul Islam for providing food for the campaigners on Sunday. Sirajul was also instrumental in securing a donation from a local businessman this month. It is great to have the support of someone with such strong, local community connections. After running the Lib Dems close in Cathedrals ward in May, I hope we can all ensure Sirajul and others get elected for Labour in 2018.
In the meantime, plans are afoot for expanding my campaign team (get in touch if you want to be more closely involved), finishing the office re-fit, and engaging with our twinned CLPs. Watch this space for further campaign dates - and, as ever, if you or someone you know wishes to contribute or donate to the campaign please let me know.
Thanks again Team Labour!
